The Crown had sought a jail sentence of two years less one day. Assistant Crown attorney Peter Leger declined to comment after the sentencing."Because of his (Christink's) irresponsible desire to impress his passengers with the speed capabilities of his car, two young people died," Superior Court Justice Robert Thompson's written sentencing reasons said.
"This was not a momentary lapse in judgment. Mr. Christink made an obvious choice to disregard common sense.
"At issue is whether Mr. Christink's actions were so egregious as to prove him ineligible for consideration of a conditional sentence."
Thompson said "denunciation and general deterrence" are the primary considerations for sentencing here. That doesn't necessarily mean jail though, he said.
"Other than speed, there was no other reckless driving on the part of Christink," Thompson wrote. Some driving is "more brazen" than others.
Thompson decided public safety could be addressed by a five-year driving ban. He said conditional sentences can be made tough enough to "not be seen as mere slaps on the hand."
